John served his purpose on vinyl when Steve left.
Even if Johns voice has held up better, and I'm sure it has since it was used so much less.
I don't care.
Steve is the man who sang 'em.
I don't care if he whispers them, or lets Billy take the choruses, Steves' the man!
When Steve left, it was one man down, Kerry was with them and it was kind of Kansas.
With the current line up, if Steve was gone well...
That's not Kansas to me.

It would not be.

I guess my issue with these kinds of threads is that it wasn't like Steve was prevented from doing stuff with Kansas during the VC/DM era. Steve quit. He did not want to be in Kansas. He wanted to do other stuff. He left. The band needed someone to sing and write some tunes. JE fit the bill and did the job. It WAS Kansas. I miss Robby and Dave. I miss Kerry being in Kansas. However, I also like Rags, Billy, Steve Morse, JE and Greg Robert. I appreciate the fact that those "New Kansas" players stepped in and did their best. Is it Kansas? It might not be the Kansas we want, but it is Kansas.

I understand you, and can appreciate your thoughts. For me however, Steve Walsh was the main reason I became a fan way back when. Without Steve, I PERSONALLY have no interest is a lineup without him. I have seen every lineup with him. This by no means says I think Elefante was not a good vocalist. He is quite capable, just not acceptable for me.

I accept all of the Kansas alumni for what they brought.
Rags brings youth, vitality & vituosity plus the missing twin guitar!
We lose Robbies presence, original member status and great vocal parts-a key original component.
Billy is a great bass player, warm personal stage presence and great vocals.
We lose daves BIG live bass sound. Daves bass playing really stood out live.
Gregg filled in the other key component that freed Steve up and kept the band closer to being able to pull off the full richness and scope of its songs.
We lost Kerry!
Steve Morse is Steve Morse!
John Elefante.
Very good hard for anyone to cover vocals when they were needed.
We lost Steve.
I could see any of these guys join Kansas on stage, but have the hardest time with John.
Sorry, it's a personal opinion but as I said it reminds me of Sammy on stage with VH.
Kind of "faggy," I just don't like it...

For what it's worth...

I, somewhat reluctantly, saw Kansas with Elefante on more than one occasion. I was and am a big fan of Kansas, Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren... Kerry Livgren WAS the reason I went to see Kansas with Elefante - period. Elefante, in my opinion is a decent singer, but one of the worst front men ever! His lame'o "shadow boxing" when he would sing drove me crazy! Kansas didn't need Mike Gleason, Warren Ham, Terry Brock and all the rest of those guys... (It's amazing how many people it took to make up for Steves' absence.)

Just look at the current lineup to see what these five guys can pull off with amazing skill and talent!

Kansas is, was, and always will be with Steve Walsh singing! When Steve quits singing with Kansas... it's all over folks!

I think they kinda did that after SW left in 1980, only without the cameras.

wikipedia.org had this to say......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Elefante

2008 Onward
At the dawn of 2008, Elefante has produced and/or performed on more than 100 major label albums. Through his work, he helped transform Christian hard rock from a handful of bands to a mainstream musical genre. The brotherhood had endured, and the two brothers had together achieved considerable artistic and commercial success. Elefante realized, though, that he was still a songwriter at heart. And that the ultimate measure of his career was sharing the joy of his faith; one that moved, sustained, and inspired him.

John is currently writing material for several new albums. The first release will be The Best of John Elefante, comprised of favorites from Mastedon and his solo albums. There will be three new songs, and a bonus track, as well.

John’s next album is being kept under wraps until its release, more than a year off. Musically, it is a return to his roots, but also explores new genres for him. In a departure from his radio-friendly mainstay, this album focuses on a more personal, artistic aesthetic.

I think John E has plenty to be proud of, it seems he followed his heart for the last 20 + years and has built a nice carreer.

Agreed. He accomplished much. I just had no interest in Kansas when he fronted the band.

I still prefer Steve, but JE had the good sense not to be a drunk and a drug addict and is a Wheathead like the rest of us.

I agree Steve is the voice of Kansas, but John should not get the step child treatment.

Remember it was Phil, Kerry, Dave, Rich and RS that choose the guy.
